For Gum Health

Periodontics

At Square Mile Dental Centre, we offer our patients 360-degree care of their oral health, including periodontics. Periodontics covers the care, maintenance, and treatment of the gums, encompassing everything from preventive care measures to the detection and treatment of gum disease, gingivitis, and periodontitis. Gum disease is one of the most common oral health issues patients face. In fact, it’s one of the most common diseases in Europe.

Luckily, it is also highly preventable and highly treatable. This is important, because gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss, and here at Square Mile Dental Centre, we aim to reduce the chance of tooth loss wherever possible. Our periodontics treatments start with preventive measures such as regular dental hygiene appointments to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth. If we suspect gum disease has taken hold, we’ll perform a thorough check to determine just how extensive the infection is, from where we’ll be able to develop a bespoke treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the symptoms of gum disease/periodontitis?

Bleeding, swelling and / or redness of the gums, bad breath, loose teeth, blood after brushing the teeth.

Will the treatment hurt?

We’ll always make sure you’re as comfortable as possible. More extensive gum disease can require gum planing or periodontic surgery which is performed with anaesthetic.

Am I at a greater risk of gum disease

There are several factors that can increase your risk of gum disease including smoking, improper oral hygiene, alcohol or drug abuse, certain medications, diabetes, hormonal changes, poor diet, and ill-fitting dental restorations.

What are the follow up or aftercare procedures?

Treatment for gum disease will vary according to the extent of the disease present, and so this will affect your aftercare needs. If you have undergone anaesthetic, you’ll need to be accompanied home and we’ll carefully go through your specific aftercare instructions at the time. Most important is to maintain proper oral hygiene and care once the disease has been treated, so we can ensure that it does not recur in the future.
