For Tempromandibular Joint Disorder
Splints
Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD) is a fairly common disorder affecting the jaw that many patients only ever experience mild symptoms from. Some patients, however, can experience persistent symptoms such as headaches, pain in the jaw, ear blockage, and even migraines. Such symptoms can not only cause pain, but can interfere with your daily life and ability to sleep well at night. If this is the case, then splints might be the answer.
Splints – also sometimes referred to simply as mouthguards – are a removable dental device usually made of a firm but reasonably flexible acrylic resin. They can be made for either your upper or lower jaw and are completely transparent. Your splint will be made just for you, so it fits snugly over your teeth and is as comfortable as possible. This will involve having an impression or digital scan taken, from which your personal splint will be made.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Are splints permanent?
-
While splints are obviously removable, as long as you keep wearing your splints frequently, then the relief you receive from them should last forever. Your splint may eventually wear out – or you may lose it / them – but we would be able to fit you for a new set very easily.
- How does the splint work?
-
Splints work by helping to improve the function of the jaw which in turns relieves and reduces pain in the area, and can help prevent headaches from occurring.
- What are the benefits of splints?
-
Splints are a permanent form of treatment when it comes to TMJD. They can help protect the teeth from grinding and clenching which can cause increased tooth wear, and they can also help relieve any pain the patient might be in.
- What happens if my pain increases?
-
In rare instances, splints can cause pain to increase in the patient. If this is the case, you should stop wearing your splint and come to see us immediately and we’ll be able to find another solution and treatment for you.
